Sixteen years ago, the first Big Bang Festival was organised in Dublin by CityArts and Wet Paint Arts, changing the landscape of drumming in Ireland forever. Big Bang, now an independent festival, continues to celebrate a broad spectrum of styles of drumming, but also rhythm as it affects other art forms such as dance, voice and visual art.
The Big Bang has presented a diverse range of international performers: Trilok Gurtu (India), Mamady Keita (Guinea), Johnny Kalsi (UK), Sergio Krakowski (Brazil), HeartBeat Percussion (Singapore), Monobloco (Brazil), Seckou Keita (Senegal), Andrea Piccioni (Italy) and Abdullah Chhadeh (Syria).
It’s time for the annual Big Bang Festival of Rhythm August 20th, 21st & 22nd. The festival that celebrates everything to do with rhythm is bringing some of the worlds best rhythm makers to Dublin once again for people of all ages to participate in and enjoy rhythm making.
Headlining this year is Bernard ‘Pretty’ Purdie, the world’s most recorded drummer, who will be appearing with a stellar line up of acts from samba bands and beat boxers to west African drumming groups at the Button Factory on Saturday night (22 August, €10). You can see Bernard explain his famous ‘Pudie Shuffle’ in person in his inimitable style at his workshop at the National Concert Hall at 5pm on Saturday.
Babara Bangoura, the Guinean djembe master will be kick starting the festival at the Twisted Pepper on Friday night along with local West African drum and dance outfit Wassa Wassa.
If you’ve never drummed before in your life, you are invited to come to drum ‘On the Edge of Chaos’ in The Lab, Foley St on Saturday morning or come to the weekly open sessions in Waltons on Tuesdays at 6.30pm, leading to the Big Bang 5 in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar on Sunday 22nd at 4.30pm, when a hundred drummers from all over Ireland and beyond will come together for the climactic event of the festival.
